Paul instructs Timothy to keep, protect, and proclaim the truth that Jesus brings life, and he encourages him to keep running that race until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. You might want to circle the word “appearing,” it's a very technical Greek word that I love, and it means “to appear in order to deliver someone in trouble.” Don’t you just love that about Jesus?!
He's coming back, beloved, to secure His kingdom. He's coming back to take back His throne. He's coming back to receive all glory, but He's also coming back to get us out of here! So what he's telling him is that one day soon the Lamb who laid down His life is coming back as a lion with a mighty roar to slay His enemies, and make this place right.
In 2 Thessalonians chapter 1 Paul, Silas and Timothy go to the church at Thessalonica. And they told the people,
“Grace and peace be with you. We thank God for you and for the faith and the love that you have towards one another. In all the persecutions and tribulations that you endure, it is a token of the righteous judgment of God that you may be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God for which you're suffering. It's a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you, and to you who are troubled, rest with the Lord. Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and obey not the Gospel, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the glory of His power when He comes to be glorified in his saints.”
He's going to be glorified in us as He honors the perseverance that we had. Oh my goodness! I don't know about you, but when I hear that He's coming back, it makes me feel like a little kid and I just want to say, “Father, when?!” Only God knows when, and Jesus said that it's not for us to know. Which mean for us - the worst four letter word in the English language... Wait.
But here's what we can’t forget friends, we don't just wait, we trust while we wait. Paul knew that would be hard for us so he offers us some encouragement, and the encouragement is, we wait and we trust because He's trustworthy.
Each week, Pastor Frank sends several short, encouraging videos to his circle of friends.
